CORRUGATED METAL CULVERTS FOR RAILROAD PURPOSES

SPECIFICATIONS ARE BEING PREPARED ON CORRUGATED CULVERTS FROM A STANDPOINT OF STRENGTH, DURABILITY AND ECONOMY. INVESTIGATION RESULTS ARE PRESENTED ON SPELTERT COATING, METHODS OF MANUFACTURE, RIVETING, ETC. THE TYPES TESTED WERE THE FOLLOWING: THREE-FOOT LENGTH OF REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPE, 24-INCH INSIDE DIAMETER WITH 3-INCH WALLS, MAKING THE TOTAL OUTSIDE DIAMETER 30 INCHES. ADJOINING THE CONCRETE PIPE AT THE OPEN END WAS PLACED A 2-FOOT SECTION OF 30-INCH DIAMETER 12-GAGE CORRUGATED PIPE, AND NEXT TO THIS, A 14-FOOT SECTION OF 30-INCH DIAMETER 12-GAGE CORRUGATED PIPE. INVESTIGATION OF AVAILABLE PRESSURE MEASURING DEVICES LED TO THE SECTION OF THE SOIL PRESSURE CELL, COMMONLY CALLED THE GOLDBECK CELL. FOR THE CONCRETE PIPE THE PRESSURE CELLS WERE INSERTED IN HOLES CUT IN THE WALLS. FOR THE CORRUGATED PIPE, THE SAME MANNER OF INSTALLATION WAS FOLLOWED, EXCEPT HOLES WERE CUT THROUGH THE PIPE WALL AND THE CELLS BOLTED ON, USING A CAST-IRON FILLER BLOCK CORRUGATED ON ONE SIDE. THE PRESSURE WAS DEVELOPED WITH AN OIL PUMP. SUBSEQUENT TESTS AT FARINA, ILLINOIS, INCLUDED ALSO 24-INCH AND 36-INCH CORRUGATED PIPE. CHARTS PRESENT RESULTS OF DEFLECTIONS, PRESSURES, VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL, FOR BOTH RIGID AND FLEXIBLE TYPES. RESULTS SO FAR SHOW THAT: (1) THE INTENSITY OF VERTICAL PRESSURE MEASURED BY THE TOP CELLS ON THE CORRUGATED CULVERTS IS ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THE MEASURED VERTICAL PRESSURE ON THE RIGID TYPE OF CULVERT UNDER THE SAME CONDITION OF LOADING, (2) THE INTENSITY OF VERTICAL PRESSURE MEASURED BY THE TOP CELLS OF THE CORRUGATED CULVERTS IS ABOUT 54 PERCENT OF THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT COLUMNS OF THE MATERIAL ABOVE THE CELLS, (3) THE INTENSITY OF VERTICAL PRESSURE MEASURED BY THE TOP CELLS OF THE RIGID CULVERTS IS ABOUT 158 PERCENT OF THE WEIGHT OF THE UNIT COLUMNS OF THE MATERIAL ABOVE THE CELLS, (4) THE INTENSITY OF PRESSURE AT THE HORIZONTAL AXIS OF THE CORRUGATED CULVERT IS EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN THE INTENSITY OF PRESSURE AT THE VERTICAL AXIS, AND (5) THE INTENSITY OF PRESSURE AT THE HORIZONTAL AXIS OF THE RIGID CULVERT IS ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THE INTENSITY OF PRESSURE AT THE VERTICAL AXIS. OBSERVATIONS ARE BEING CONTINUED AT INTERVALS OF ABOUT 90 DAYS.
