APPLICATIONS OF X-RAY DIFFRACTION IN THE PAINT INDUSTRY
X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS IS APPLICABLE TO ANY CRYSTAL- LINE MATERIAL AND IS EMPLOYED TO IDENTIFY PIGMENT AND EXTENDER COMPONENTS IN THE SOLIDS FROM A TOTAL PAINT SYSTEM. THE METHOD IS FASTER AND MORE ABSOLUTE THAN OTHER PROCEDURES. ROUTINE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSES MAY BE APPLIED TO A COMPLETE PAINT FILM OR TO A SEPARATED PIGMENT-EXTENDER POWDER. THIS CAPABILITY PROVIDES A VALUABLE TOOL FOR QUALITY CONTROL OF FINISHED PAINT PRODUCTS. VERY SMALL SAMPLES WEIGHING ONLY A FEW MILLIGRAMS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY USE OF THE POWDER CAMERA TECHNIQUE. X-RAY DIFFRACTION IS AN INVALUABLE TOOL WHEN USED FOR MONITORING CHEMICAL REACTIONS IN WHICH INTERMEDIATE AND FINAL PRODUCTS ARE CRYSTALLINE. OTHER APPLICATIONS ARE MONITORING PIGMENT AND EXTENDER MANUFACTURE, CRYSTALLINE PARTICLE SIZE DETERMINATION, AND IDENTIFICATION OF PRODUCTS NOT DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN PAINT. /JPT/
