ENGINEERS SEEK MATERIALS FOR HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS

THE NEW STUDY OF MICROSCOPIC AND MACROSCOPIC CHEMICAL REACTIONS THAT RADICALLY ALTER THE PERFORMANCE OF MATERIALS, CALLED PHYSICOCHEMICAL MECHANICS IS DISCUSSED. RESEARCH IN THIS AREA IS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY MATERIALS BEHAVE UNPREDICTABLY, EVEN IN SOME ENVIRONMENTS LONG CONSIDERED HARMLESS. MORE MEANINGFUL INFORMATION IS BEING OBTAINED ON THE EFFECT OF THE ENVIRONMENT ON RELIABILITY. THIS SCIENCE CROSSES THE BORDERS OF PHYSICAL AND COLLOID CHEMISTRY, MOLECULAR PHYSICS OF SOLIDS, THERMODYNAMICS, AND THE STUDY OF THE STRENGTH OF STRUCTURAL MATERIALS. IN ANALYZING BEHAVIOR OF A SOLID IN A GIVEN ENVIRONMENT, RESEARCHERS BREAK THE PROBLEM DOWN TO SUCH FACTORS AS THE CHEMISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT, THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE SURFACE. THE METALLURGICAL STATE OF A METAL, AND THE MECHANICAL STRESSES IN THE SYSTEM. THESE FACTORS TOGETHER INFLUENCE THE RESPONSE OF METAL SURFACES TO FRICTION, WEAR, AND VARIOUS LUBRICATION SYSTEMS. DESTRUCTIVE ADSORPTION, DESTRUCTIVE DISSOLUTION, AND ABSORPTION ARE DISCUSSED. BOARD STUDIES IN OCEANOGRAPHY AND BIOCHEMICAL RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED.
