DETERMINATION OF CHARACTERISTIC VALUES ON 5 SPECIAL TEST SECTIONS FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPARING THE EFFECTS OF RECOMMENDED SPEED AND MAXIMUM SPEED ON FEDERAL MOTORWAYS

WITHOUT INTERRUPTING TRAFFIC, MEASUREMENTS LASTING SEVERAL HOURS WERE MADE ON EACH SPECIAL TEST SECTION ON A TOTAL OF 8 DAYS (2 DAYS DURING EACH SEASON). WITH THE AID OF INDUCTION LOOPS, MOMENTARY SPEEDS AND THE INTERVALS BETWEEN ALL MOTOR VEHICLES WERE MEASURED BY LANE AND CLASSIFIED INTO TWO GROUPS OF CARS AND LORRIES. AT THE SAME TIME BY MONITORING REGISTRATION NUMBERS AND USING AUTOMATIC CAMERAS, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE BOTH TRAVELLING TIME AND THE DYNAMICS OF PASSIVE AND ACTIVE OVERTAKING ON TEST SECTIONS MEASURING 15-23KMS. SUPPLEMENTARY OBSERVATIONS INCLUDED THE FREQUENCY OF LANE CHANGING MANOEUVRES ON ROAD SECTIONS 500 METERS LONG ASSOCIATED WITH THE MEASURING POINTS. BY INCLUDING TECHNICAL MOTOR VEHICLE DATA (FOR CARS ONLY) OBTAINED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE FEDERAL OFFICE FOR MOTOR JOURNEYS, IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE VARYING CHARACTERISTIC COMBINATIONS BY MEANS OF DATA PROCESSING. THE RESULTS OF THESE WERE STORED ON MAGNETIC TAPES AND PUBLISHED IN LISTS.
