THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE DYNAMIC STEERING BEHAVIOUR OF PASSENGER CARS

THEORETISCHE UNTERSUCHUNG DES DYNAMISCHEN LENKVERHALTENS VON PERSONENKRAFTWAGEN

MEASUREMENTS SHOW THAT PASSENGER CARS BEHAVE DURING THE MAJOR PART OF THE JOURNEY AS LINEAR OSCILLATORS IN THEIR REACTION TO STEERING MOVEMENTS. IN THIS AREA PREDICTION OF THEIR STEERING BEHAVIOUR IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE. KEEPING ON COURSE IS CHARACTERISED BY STATIC ORBITAL REACTION AND DYNAMIC FREQUENCY OR TIME RESPONSE. IT SEEMS MORE SENSIBLE TO EXAMINE THE ALTERATION IN THE STEERING ANGLE WHICH GIVES THE PATH OF THE CENTRE OF GRAVITY THAN THE MORE EASILY MEASURED ANGLE OF YAW. CALCULATIONS WITH THE NUMERICAL VALUES OF AN AVERAGE PASSENGER CAR SHOW THE STEERING CHARACTERISTICS BOTH FOR A SIMPLE PLANE SUBSTITUTE SYSTEM WHICH GIVES CLOSED SOLUTIONS FOR THE SIGNIFICANT ENTITIES, AND FOR AN EXTENDED THREE-DIMENSIONAL MODEL. IT IS APPARENT FROM THE MATHEMATICAL RELATIONS THAT CIRCULAR MOTION CONSTITUTES ONLY PART OF THE TOTAL REACTION AND THAT IT INFLUENCES THE DYNAMIC TRACKING STABILITY. IN THIS CONTEXT THE EXCESSIVE EMPHASIS WHICH UP TO NOW HAS BEEN GIVEN TO CIRCULAR MOTION BEHAVIOUR DOES NOT APPEAR SENSIBLE. THE SOLUTIONS FOR THE PLANE SYSTEMS GIVE INDICATIONS OF THE POSSIBILITIES OPEN TO THE DESIGNER FOR INFLUENCING THE DYNAMIC STEERING REACTION. A RAPID ALTERATION OF STEERING ANGLE IS ACHIEVED BY ALL MEASURES WHICH CAUSE HIGH YAW FREQUENCIES AND LOW DEGREES OF DAMPING.
