INDIVIDUAL SCAFFOLDING COLUMNS ARE GENERALLY JOINTED BY BRACES TO BRIDGE BENTS (VERTICAL LOAD BEARING MEMBERS). THE STABILITY OF A SINGLE FREE COLUMN IS KNOWN; FOR THE TOTAL STABILITY OF A BENT, A SPECIAL INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN. THE INFLUENCE OF THE SHEAR STIFFNESS OF THE BRACES CANNOT BE NEGLECTED. IT IS GENERALLY SUFFICIENT HOWEVER, TO CALCULATE A LIMIT SHEAR STIFFNESS. WHERE THE BRACES ARE WEAKER THAN THE LIMIT SHEAR STIFFNESSES, THE BUCKLING LENGTH OF THE BENT CAN BE DETERMINED FROM DIAGRAMS. TWO CALCULATED EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED.
