PROBLEMS OF THE MANUFACTURE AND TESTING OF WELDED BUTT-JOINTED THICK LAMINATED SECTIONS

PROBLEME DES HERSTELLENS UND PRUEFENS VON GESCHWEISSTEN STUMPFSTOESSEN DICKER LAMELLENPAKETE

AN EXTREMELY ECONOMIC SYSTEM IN BRIDGE DESIGN IS PROVIDED BY THE DECK BRIDGE WITH BOX SECTION. WITH LOW PERMITTED CONSTRUCTION HEIGHT AND LONG SPANS THERE INEVITABLY RESULTS A LARGE BOTTOM SURFACE. BOTTOM LAMINATED SECTIONS OF 100 MM TOTAL THICKNESS ARE ALREADY IN GENERAL USE. THE TENDENCY HOWEVER IS TO GO FARTHER, BY THE USE OF 200 MM AND THICKER LAMINATED SECTIONS. THE BUTT-JOINTING OF SUCH LAMINATED SECTIONS OF RELATIVELY SHORT LENGTH BUT GREAT THICKNESS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR AUTOMATED WELDING, SO THAT ONLY THE BAR ELECTRODE HAND WELDING EQUIPMENT MAY BE USED. DETAILS FOLLOW OF THE JOINT PREPARATION, THE WELDING PRACTICE AND THE TESTING OF SUCH BUTT-WELDED THICK LAMINATED SECTIONS, AND IN PARTICULAR OF THE SITE CONNECTIONS.
