SOIL PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS IN TUNNEL STRUCTURES OF THE HAMBURG UNDERGROUND RAILWAY

THE TAKING OF SOIL PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE DESCRIBED FOR THE TWIN TUBE TUNNEL AND FOR A 28 M DEEP SHAFT OF THE HAMBURG UNDERGROUND RAILWAY NETWORK. THE SOIL PRESSURE IS MAINLY INFLUENCED BOTH IN MAGNITUDE AND DISTRIBUTION BY THE BUILDING PROCESS. WALL LOADINGS OF UP TO 4 MP/M2 RESULTING FROM COMPACTION WERE MEASURED, INDEPENDENT OF THE DEPTH. ARCHING OF THE SOIL OVER THE TUNNEL ROOF WAS OBSERVED AT HIGHER DEPTHS OF OVERBURDEN. THE SOIL PRESSURE ON THE TUNNEL WALLS AND TIMBERING WERE APPROXIMATELY EQUAL. AN INCREASE OF THE LEVEL OF EARTH PRESSURE TO THE EARTH PRESSURE AT REST STAGE WAS NOT ESTABLISHED EVEN AFTER EIGHT YEARS.
