THE NEW HUNGARIAN ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

DIE NEUE UNGARISCHE STRASSENVERKEHRS-ORDNUNG

NEW ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS CAME INTO FORCE IN HUNGARY ON 1/1/76. THE MAIN PROVISIONS AGREE WITH THOSE OF GERMAN LAW, AND THE PRINCIPLE OF TRUST APPLIES. THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL BY DRIVERS IS COMPLETELY PROHIBITED. A BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT OF UP TO 0,8 PER THOUSAND IS REGARDED AS A MISDEMEANOUR, WHILE HIGHER VALUES ARE CONSIDERED AS CRIMES. AUXILIARY POLICE, DISTINGUISHED BY BLUE ARMBANDS, ARE TO BE CONSIDERED AS POLICE OFFICERS WHOSE ORDERS AND SIGNALS MUST BE OBEYED. SPECIAL PROVISIONS OPERATE IN FAVOUR OF PEDESTRIANS. ALL THE VARIOUS TYPES OF ROAD SIGNS CORRESPOND TO THOSE IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC. THE MAXIMUM SPEED ON MOTORWAYS IS 120 KM/H, OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS 100 KM/H, AND INSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS 60 KM/H. AURAL SIGNALS MAY ONLY BE USED WHEN THERE IS DANGER OF AN ACCIDENT, AND OUTSIDE BUILT-UP AREAS ALSO WHEN OVERTAKING. THE POLICE MUST BE CALLED IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING PERSONAL INJURY OR MATERIAL DAMAGE EXCEEDING 1500 DM. IN CASES REQUIRING POLICE INTERVENTION, THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS PROHIBITED UNTIL THE INVESTIGATIONS AT THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
