THE LOAD BEARING AND DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE PIERS WITH ROLLER BEARINGS

THE ACCURATE AND LOW-COST DETERMINATION OF THE BEARING CAPACITY OF SLENDER REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE PIERS WITH ROLLER BEARINGS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE ALTERNATING INFLUENCE OF THE SUPER STRUCTURE AND PIERS, IS POSSIBLE ONLY WITH THE AID OF A COMPUTER. IN THIS REPORT THE BASIS OF A RELEVANT COMPUTER PROGRAM IN FORTRAN IV IS EXPLAINED, SO THAT THE GEOMETRIC AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ROLLER BEARINGS CAN BE CONSIDERED. FOR A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM THE DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC LOADING PATTERNS IS NECESSARY, SO THAT THE TIME SERIES OF THE LOAD INCREASES AND SUPERSTRUCTURE DEFORMATIONS WHICH ARE TO BE CALCULATED, MAY BE CONTROLLED. THE RESULTS OF THE BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATIONS ARE ILLUSTRATED IN RELATION TO VARIOUS PARAMETERS. THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS ARE CONSIDERED: LOADING, SUPER STRUCTURE MOVEMENT, ROLLER FRICTION COEFFICIENT, PIER SLENDERNESS, INITIAL ECCENTRICITY BEING ASSUMED FOR THE ROLLER BEARINGS. IN ADDITION A PRACTICAL APPROXIMATION METHOD-FOUNDED ON THE CLASSICAL ELASTIC THEORY IS DERIVED. THIS MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE MORE ACCURATELY THAN HITHERTO, THE BEARING CAPACITIES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE PIERS WITH ROLLER BEARINGS, WITHOUT EXCESSIVE NUMERICAL OPERATIONS.
