ASSESSMENT OF THE DRIVING APTITUDE OF THE PHYSICALLY DISABLED

THE DRIVING APTITUDE OF 200 PHYSICALLY DISABLED PERSONS WAS ASSESSED. OF THESE, 282 WERE MEN WITH AN AVERAGE AGE OF 41 YEARS AND 18 WERE WOMEN WITH AN AVERAGE AGE OF 34. AMPUTATION PROVED TO BE THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF DISABLEMENT, WITH A TOTAL OF 98, (65 LEG AND 34 ARM AMPUTATIONS) FURTHERMORE 50 CASES OF PARALYSIS WERE NOTED, INCLUDING 33 POLIOMYLITIS, 7 DIPARAPLEGIA PARALYSIS, 1 SPASTIC PARALYSIS AND 9 OTHER TYPES OF PARALYSIS. OF THE REMAINING CASES EXAMINED, 9 SUFFERED FROM ANKYLOSIS, 3 FROM BECHTEREW DISEASE AND 33 FROM VARIOUS OTHER ILLNESSES. 194 PATIENTS WERE PRONOUNCED FIT TO DRIVE AFTER SUITABLE ADJUSTMENTS HAD BEEN MADE TO THEIR MOTOR VEHICLES AND 6 WERE ASSESSED AS UNFIT TO DRIVE. OF THESE 6, 2 WERE ARM AMPUTEES, 1 SUFFERED FROM PROGRESSIVE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY, 1 FROM SPASTIC TETRAPLEGIA AND 1 FROM BECHTEREW DISEASE.
