EXAMINATION OF THE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN IN 5-7 AGE GROUP

ZUR UEBERPRUEFUNG DES VERKEHRSVERHALTENS VON 5- BIS 7JAEHRIGEN KINDERN

THIS EXPERIMENT IS BEING UNDERTAKEN IN ORDER TO GAIN SOME INFORMATION ON THE TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN IN THE 5 - 7 AGE GROUP. AS A SYSTEMATIC SURVEILLANCE OF CHILDREN IN REAL TRAFFIC WAS NOT POSSIBLE DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS AND THE LACK OF PERSONNEL, THE RESEARCHERS ATTEMPTED TO SIMULATE SOME TRAFFIC SITUATIONS FOR STRUCTURED SURVEILLANCE AND ASSESSMENT. ALTHOUGH BEHAVIOUR IN THIS CONTROLLED AND SIMULATED SITUATION CANNOT BE REGARDED AS BEING INDICATIVE OF EVERYDAY TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR, THE FREQUENCY OF RESULTS NEVERTHELESS INDICATES THOSE SKILLS WHICH COME EASILY TO CHILDREN AND THOSE WHICH POSE DIFFICULTIES FOR THEM. THE STUDY SHOWS THAT TRAFFIC EDUCATION WHICH AMOUNTS MERELY TO THE PROVISION OF RULES DOES NOT PREPARE CHILDREN SUFFICIENTLY FOR BEHAVING IN TRAFFIC.
