THE EFFECT OF AIR POLLUTION ON PLANTS

WIRKUNGEN VON LUFTVERUNREINIGUNGEN AUF PFLANZEN

AS PLANTS ARE INFLUENCED BY AIR POLLUTION AND OFTEN REACT IN SPECIFIC WAYS, THEY MAY BE USED AS INDICATORS FOR THE DETECTION AND SURVEILLANCE OF AIR POLLUTION. PARTICULAR DAMAGE ARISES FROM TOXIC DUSTS, THE OCCURRENCE OF WHICH IS RISING CONSTANTLY. GREAT DANGER ALSO ARISES FROM HEAVY METALS, WHICH ENTER THE PLANTS NOT ONLY THROUGH THEIR SURFACES, BUT ALSO THROUGH THE GROUND AND THE ROOTS. THE LEAD CONTENT OF PETROL GIVES RISE TO A MAINLY EXTERNAL DUST COATING ON THE EXTERIOR OF VEGETABLE PLANTS NEAR HIGHLY TRAFFICKED HIGHWAYS, WHICH CAN ONLY BE DEALT WITH BY THOROUGH WASHING. THE MAIN DANGER FOR VEGETATION ARISES, HOWEVER, FROM GAS-FORMING AIR POLLUTION, SUCH AS SULPHUR DIOXIDE, WHICH LEADS TO A REDUCTION OF CHLOROPHYL AND AFFECTS CONIFERS PARTICULARLY. THE PLANT DISEASES, WHICH ARISE FROM SUCH ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, PROVIDE AN AID TO THE FACTORY INSPECTORS IN THE RECOGNITION OF EXCESSIVE POLLUTION LOADINGS. IN SOME REGIONS, CONTROL INDICATOR PLANTS ARE THEREFORE PLANTED BY SPECIAL TECHNIQUES, ALTHOUGH THE AIR POLLUTION CAN ALSO BE EASILY OBSERVED IN WILD PLANTS.
