MEASURING THE EFFECTIVE SIZE OF STREET LIGHTS IN RELATION TO THE PERCEPTION OF GLARE.

BEITRAG ZUR MESSUNG DER FUER DIE BLENDEMPFINDUNG EFFEKTIVEN AUSDEHNUNG VON STRASSENLEUCHTEN

THE CIE COMMITTEE TC 4.6 IS PREPARING A REPORT, ACCORDING TO WHICH THE SENSITIVITY TO GLARE IS TO BE EVALUATED BY MEANS OF THE "GLARE-CONTROL-MARK METHOD" BY DETERMINING A NUMERICAL GLARE CONTROL COEFFICIENT. THE MAIN BASIS OF THE GLARE-CONTROL-MARK METHOD ARE PSYCHOMETRIC INVESTIGATIONS WHICH WERE CARRIED OUT ON STATISTICAL AND DYNAMIC STREET MODELS WITH A SINGLE ROW LIGHTING ARRANGEMENT. THE LIGHT SOURCES USED ARE DISTINGUISHED BY HAVING AN ALMOST UNIFORM LIGHT INTENSITY OVER THE WHOLE AREA. THE EFFECTIVE SIZE OF LIGHT IN RELATION TO THE PERCEPTION OF GLARE IS DEFINED, AND THE PROBLEM OF DETERMINING THIS AREA IN PRACTICE IS DISCUSSED. THE "SHIELDING METHOD" SUGGESTED BY THE CIE COMMITTEE IN WHICH THE MEASUREMENTS ARE CARRIED OUT ON THE LUMINOUS SURFACE OF A LIGHT SOURCE AS VIEWED AT AN ANGLE OF 76 DEGREES IS CRITICALLY EXAMINED. THE AUTHORS' OWN PROPOSAL FOR MEASURING THE EFFECTIVE SIZE OF LIGHT SOURCE FOR GLARE PERCEPTION IS TO PROJECT AN IMAGE OF THE SOURCE AS VIEWED AT AN ANGLE OF 76 DEGREES ON A SCREEN HAVING A DIFFUSIVE REFLECTING SURFACE BY MEANS OF A LENS. THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE IMAGE REPRODUCES THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE LUMINOUS INTENSITY OF THE SOURCE WITH SUFFICIENT ACCURACY AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MEASURING APPARATUS ARE DESCRIBED.
