THE AIRBAG AS AN IMPROVEMENT OF FUTURE PASSENGER SAFETY

AN AIRBAG SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED, WHICH, BY VIRTUE OF ITS DESIGN, CAN BE CALLED THE MOST COMPACT AT PRESENT AVAILABLE. THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF SOLID FUEL GAS GENERATOR, AIRBAG, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRONIC SENSORS AND KNEE PROTECTION ARE MENTIONED AND ILLUSTRATED WITH DRAWINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS. IN ADDITION THE PROTECTIVE ACTION ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER IS OUTLINED. PROBLEMS INHERENT IN THE SYSTEM SUCH AS NOISE, RELIABILITY, BEHAVIOUR IN THE VEHICLE, BODY SIZE AND NATURE OF THE ACCIDENT ARE DISCUSSED. THIS AIRBAG SYSTEM INCORPORATING SOLID FUEL GAS GENERATION AND ELECTRONIC ACTUATION CAN BE COMPARED FAVOURABLY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF SAFETY WITH CONVENTIONAL GAS GENERATORS. IN ADDITION TO THE ADVANTAGES OF COMPACTNESS AND LIGHTNESS, THE SOLUTION TO THE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS PROVIDED BY THIS DESIGN CONCEPT REPRESENTS SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS.
