INJURIES CAUSED BY A 3-POINT AUTOMATIC SAFETY BELT. AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRESSURE CAUSED BY MOVEMENT AND THE INJURY MECHANISM FROM MEDICAL AND TECHNICAL VIEWPOINTS

INTERDISCIPLINARY ANALYSIS WAS MADE IN AN ACCIDENT CASE, WHERE INCORRECT HANDLING OF A 3-POINT AUTOMATIC SAFETY BELT COMBINED WITH THE STANDARD CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS ON A MOTOR VEHICLE TO CAUSE ABDOMINAL INJURIES (SAFETY BELT INEFFECTIVE DUE TO THE BODY HARNESS NOT BEING FASTENED TO THE SHOULDER HARNESS). THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INFLUENCE OF FORCE AND INJURIES SUSTAINED IS ELUCIDATED IN AN ACCURATE ANALYSIS OF MOVEMENT CAUSED BY PRESSURE. THE STANDARD ANGLE OF THE BODY HARNESS (CONSTRUCTIONALLY DETERMINED) AND THE STANDARD SEATING DESIGN (SPRING CORE WITHOUT END STOPS), MAY CAUSE SUBMARINING TO OCCUR IN MORE SERIOUS CRASHES EVEN WITH CORRECT HANDLING OF A 3-POINT AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT. THE PROBABLE SPEED OF IMPACT DOES NOT PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE CRITERION FOR THE SEVERITY OF DECELERATION STRESS ON PASSENGERS, OR FOR INJURY SEVERITY.
