CORROSION AND ITS PREVENTION' A BRIEF REVIEW FOR PAINT TECHNOLOGISTS

THE FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE CORROSION OF PLAIN IRON OR STEEL IN CONTACT WITH WATER ARE ELECTROCHEMICAL IN NATURE. THE REACTION AT THE ANODE CONSISTS OF IRON GOING INTO SOLUTION. IN NEUTRAL WATERS THE CATHODE REACTION CONSISTS OF REDUCTION OF OXYGEN. THE SUSTAINED RATE OF CORROSION OF IRON IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS IS CONTROLLED BY THE AVAILABILITY OF OXYGEN IN THE CATHODE. PAINT TECHNOLOGISTS ARE GENERALLY NOT HIGHLY AWARE OF THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN THE CORROSION LITERATURE WHICH MIGHT BE USEFUL IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE EFFECTIVE PAINTS FOR METAL SURFACES. /AUTHOR/
