BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF GLARE AND THEIR NUMERICAL REPRESENTATION

DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTS ARE REPORTED FROM WHICH A FORMULA FOR THE EQUIVALENT VEILING LUMINANCE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. RESULTING FROM THIS, THERE FOLLOWS A DERIVATIVE FOR HIGHWAY ILLUMINATION. IN THIS WAY, SUBJECT TO THE DEGREE OF SCREENING, THE GREATEST PART OF THE INITIALLY OBSERVED LIGHT IS PRODUCED, BUT IT IS FURTHER DEPENDENT UPON THE ANGLE BELOW WHICH THE LIGHT APPEARS TO BE VIEWED. THE TOTAL PERCEIVED LUMINANCE RESULTS FROM THE LUMINANCE OF THE FIELD SURROUNDING THE VIEWED OBJECT AND THE EQUIVALENT DIFFUSED LUMINANCE. FROM THE KNOWN VALUES OF EQUIVALENT VEILING LUMINANCE PRODUCED BY THE LIGHT SOURCES IT IS POSSIBLE TO LEARN THE INCREASE IN THE THRESHOLD VALUE FOR THE EXISTING ILLUMINATION LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY. FROM THIS ASSOCIATION ONE CAN ALSO CALCULATE THE THRESHOLD INCREASE. IN THE FOLLOWING SECTION CONCERNING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL GLARE, IT IS STATED THAT THE EFFECT OF GLARE MAY ALSO BE ASSESSED BY SUBJECTIVE CRITERIA. THIS INCLUDES, FOR EXAMPLE, THE DISTURBANCE OF PERCEPTION, WHICH IS A FUNCTION OF THE LUMINANCE OF THE SOURCE OF GLARE, ITS SPREADING AND THE RECIPROCAL VALUE OF THE SURROUNDING LUMINANCE. THERE IS ALSO A POSITION FACTOR, WHICH ASSESSES THE POSITION OF THE GLARE SOURCE IN THE UPPER FIELD OF VIEW. PHYSIOLOGICAL GLARE COMMENCES WITH SMALL STREET LUMINANCES. HIGHER LUMINANCES RESULT IN PSYCHOLOGICAL GLARE, SINCE HERE THE THRESHOLD OF PHYSIOLOGICAL GLARE HAS HARDLY BEEN REACHED. AS A RESULT OF TWO INVESTIGATIONS AN EQUATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH ALLOWS THE CALCULATION OF THE G-VALUE AND DETERMINATION OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL GLARE.
