TRAFFIC FLOWS IN SERVICE AREAS ALONG THE FEDERAL MOTORWAYS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

VERKEHRSAUFKOMMEN AN NEBENBETRIEBEN DER BUNDESAUTOBAHNEN IM FERIENREISEVERKEHR

THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY AMONGST USERS OF SERVICE AREAS ON THE FEDERAL MOTORWAYS. THE COLLECTION OF INFORMATION TOOK PLACE AT TEN SERVICE AREAS IN SIX FEDERAL STATES ON THE 28TH JUNE AND 5TH JULY 1969. THE PURPOSE WAS TO ASCERTAIN THE EXTENT OF USAGE OF THE SERVICE AREAS BY THE HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. ON THE 5TH JULY, 157,650 VEHICLES WERE COUNTED AT TEN SECTIONS, OF WHICH 17,206 OR 10.9% USED THE FUEL AND RESTAURANT FACILITIES. THE SURVEY ELICITED INFORMATION ABOUT THE LENGTH OF STAY IN THE SERVICE AREA, THE JOURNEY PURPOSE, ACTIVITY IN THE SERVICE AREA, THE OCCUPANCY RATE, ORIGIN AND DESTINATION. COMPARING TRAFFIC IN THE SERVICE AREA WITH THAT ON THE MOTORWAY SHOWS THAT THE PROPORTIONS OF HOLIDAY TO NORMAL TRAFFIC IS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME FOR BOTH. THE PRINCIPAL CHANGE IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE HOLIDAY TRAFFIC IS ITS PURPOSE. IN NORMAL WEEKDAY TRAFFIC THE PROPORTION OF SERVICE AREA USERS WHO ARE ON BUSINESS IS 60% OF THE TOTAL. IN HOLIDAY TRAFFIC THIS FALLS TO UNDER 10%. THE AVERAGE OCCUPANCY RATE OF PRIVATE CARS IN HOLIDAY TRAFFIC AT 2.8 IS SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER THAN THE 1.8 OF NORMAL TRAFFIC. THESE CHANGES OF THE COMPOSITION AND THE DESTINATION OF THE TRAFFIC PRODUCE A CHANGE IN THE USE OF THE SERVICE AREAS. AN OVERLOADING OF THE TRAFFIC FACILITIES OF SERVICE AREAS CANNOT BE CONTEMPLATED. CONSEQUENTLY HIGHER USE OF THE AREAS MUST BE ABSORBED. BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF TRAFFIC BUILDING UP ON THE MOTORWAY, THE EFFECT OF OVERLOADING THE PETROL FILLING STATIONS IS PARTICULARLY ACUTE.
