INFLUENCE OF ALTITUDE ON THE CO EMISSION OF FOUR-STROKE OTTO ENGINES

EINFLUSS DER SEEHOEHE AUF DIE CO-EMISSION DES VIERTAKT-OTTOMOTORS

IN ORDER TO OPTIMISE ROAD TUNNEL VENTILATING SYSTEMS THE INFLUENCE OF ALTITUDE ABOVE SEA LEVEL ON THE CO EMISSION OF FOUR-STROKE OTTO ENGINES WAS INVESTIGATED THEORETICALLY AND EXPERIMENTALLY ON THE GROSSGLOCKNER ALPINE HIGHWAY. IT WAS FOUND THAT FOR MOTORS WITH CARBURETTORS, THE CO CONCENTRATION IN THE EXHAUST GASES INCREASED BY 2.1% IN VOLUME FOR EVERY 1000 M. THEREFORE CARBURETTORS SHOULD BE FITTED WITH ALTITUDE COMPENSATORS. THE EXHAUST GAS COMPOSITION OF MOTORS WITH FUEL INJECTION SYSTEMS IN WHICH THE FUEL DOSAGE IS REGULATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ABSOLUTE INLET MANIFOLD PRESSURE IS INDEPENDENT OF THE ALTITUDE.
