THE STUDIES CARRIED OUT ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF PEDESTRIANS AT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THREE-STAGE TRAFFIC SIGNAL SENSORS(AS IN DUESSELDORF)OR TWO-STAGE (AS IN OTHER PARTS OF GERMANY)PROVIDE GREATER SAFETY FOR PEDESTRIANS ARE BEING SUPPLEMENTED BY FURTHER STUDIES OF ACCIDENT OCCURRENCE AND PEDESTRIAN BEHAVIOUR AT JUNCTIONS CONTROLLED BY TRAFFIC SIGNALS.THE CONTROL STRATEGY OFTEN APPLIED AT SIGNAL-CONTROLLED JUNCTIONS,WHEREBY TURNINING VEHICLES MEET WITH CROSSING PEDESTRIANS,IS BEING EXAMINED CLOSELY TO SEE IF THERE IS ANY DETRIMENT TO SAFETY.THE STUDY IS INTENDED IN PARTICULAR TO ILLUSTRATE THE INFLUENCE OF ANY TRAFFIC ENGINEERING PARAMETERS.THE RESULTS SHOULD PROVIDE DATA ON THE ADVANTAGES OR OTHERWISE OF USING TWO- OR THREE-STAGE TRAFFIC SIGNAL SENSORS AND ON THE DEGREE OF SAFETY OF SIMULTANEOUS OR ONLY SLIGHTLY STAGGERED PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICLE FLOWS.
