KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF TRAFFIC IN 5-6 YEAR OLD CHILDREN

USING EMPIRICAL SOCIAL SCIENCE METHODS A STUDY IS TO BE MADE OF CHILDREN AGED 5-6 WHO HAVE NOT HAD ANY SYSTEMATIC GENERAL SCHOOL EDUCATION OR ANY SPECIAL ROAD USER EDUCATION;THE AIM IS TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF TRAFFIC WHICH THESE CHILDREN ALREADY HAVE,I.E.THE EXTENT TO WHICH THEY ARE ABLE TO COPE WITH RELEVANT TRAFFIC SITUATIONS.THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY ARE TO BE USED AS A BASIS FOR DEVELOPING CURRICULA FOR ROAD EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS AND FOR ESTABLISHING CRITERIA FOR DEVELOPING TEACHING MATERIAL FOR THIS AGE GROUP.TASKS INVOLVING TRAFFIC SITUATIONS RELEVANT TO THIS AGE-GROUP ARE BEING DEVELOPED.THESE TASKS CONSIST OF A PRELIMINARY TEST TO ILLUSTRATE THE QUESTIONS(COLOURED FILM)AND AN ASSOCIATED QUESTIONNAIRE.THE PROBLEMS ARE SET INDIVIDUALLY. IN PRELIMINARY TESTS THE BEST METHOD WAS FOUND TO BE THAT IN WHICH CHILDREN WERE QUESTIONNED DURING AND AFTER THE FILMS, BOTH WITH REGARD TO THE PROBLEM AREA ILLUSTRATED(ROAD TRAFFIC)AND WITH REGARD TO THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILDREN(UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEST,READINESS TO COOPERATE ETC).THIS DETERMINATION OF TRAFFIC KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ON THE LEVEL OF VERBAL REACTIONS IS BEING SUPPLEMENTED BY SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATIONS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF CHILDREN IN THIS AGE GROUP ON THE ROADS.
