DEVELOPMENT OF A PIPE SANDWICH CARRIAGEWAY SLAB FOR BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

FOR REASONS OF RATIONALIZATION IN ROAD BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION AND THE ADVANTAGES BROUGHT ABOUT BY A CARRIAGEWAY STRUCTURE CONSISTING OF A TOP AND A LOWER COVERING SLAB, BETWEEN WHICH ARE ARRANGED DENSELY PACKED PIPES IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION, A PIPE CORE SANDWICH CARRIAGEWAY SLAB IS TO BE DEVELOPED AFTER THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE SUPPORTING BEHAVIOUR. THIS CARRIAGEWAY SLAB MUST FULFIL THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: LOW MANUFACTURING COSTS (AUTOMATIC WELDING); EASY ASSEMBLY; QUICK PROVISION OF AN ELEVATED ROAD OR BRIDGE; USE OF LARGE, PREFABRICATED BUILDING PANELS; NO UNDESIRED DEFORMATION OF THE COVERING METAL; EASILY ACCESSIBLE PRIMING SURFACES; HEIGHT OF CONSTRUCTION EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN 250 MM; LIGHT FOUNDATIONS AND SUPPORTS. THE FIRST PART OF THE RESEARCH CONSISTS OF THEORETICAL STUDIES ON THE BASIS OF WHICH THE NEW DESIGN CAN BE DEVELOPED. THE SECOND PART CONSISTS IN FINDING OUT, BY MEANS OF TESTS, THE WAY IN WHICH THE CARRIAGEWAY CAN BE ECONOMICALLY CONSTRUCTED AND ASSEMBLED BY MEANS OF AUTOMATIC WELDING. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO WORK TOGETHER WITH INDUSTRY (INCLUDING MODERN WELDING TECHNOLOGY) SO THAT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT ISOLATED FROM THE EFFICIENCY OF STEEL CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS. FINALLY IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT A LARGE-SCALE TRIAL OF THE CARRIAGEWAY.
