BASIC TESTS FOR ENSURING THE COMPLETE FILLING OF THE SLIDING SLEEVES OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE MEMBERS WITH INJECTION MORTAR

GRUNDSATZVERSUCHE ZUR SICHERSTELLUNG DES VOLLSTAENDIGEN AUSFUELLENS DER HUELLROHRE VON SPANNBETONGLIEDERN MIT EINPRESSMOERTEL

WHEN PRESTRESSED MEMBERS ARE TESTED, THE CUT SAMPLES OF PRESTRESSED CHANNELS REVEAL THAT THE PRESTRESSED STEELS ARE NOT ALWAYS FULLY COATED WITH INJECTION MORTAR. THIS CAN ENDANGER THE SAFETY AND LIFE OF A PRESTRESSED CONCRETE STRUCTURE. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO ESTABLISH THE CAUSE OF THESE DEFECTS BY BASIC TESTS, AND TO CREATE OPTIMUM CONDITIONS FOR THE COATING OF THE PRESTRESSED STEELS AND THE FILLING OF THE SLIDING SLEEVE WITH INJECTION MORTAR. THE PLAN OF WORK IS: IN A FIRST SERIES OF TESTS WITH ROUNDED STEELS HAVING DIFFERENT DIAMETERS AND MUTUAL SPACING OF THE PRESTRESSING STEELS, TO DETERMINE THE FLOW CONDITIONS IN A PLEXIGLAS CONTAINER, AND FROM THIS TO ESTABLISH THE MINIMUM DISTANCE REQUIRED FOR THROUGH-FLOW. A SECOND SERIES OF TESTS IS BEING CARRIED OUT WITH PROFILED STEELS AND A LATER SERIES OF TESTS WITH CURVED PRESTRESSING STEELS. REMOVAL FROM THE PLEXIGLAS CONTAINER TAKES PLACE IN EACH CASE AFTER 24 HOURS, AND THE TESTS SAMPLES ARE THEN KEPT FOR 14 DAYS IN THE OPEN AIR. WHEN THE PRESTRESSING STEELS ARE FREED, THE COATING IS TESTED. IN A CONTINUING PROJECT 8 SERIES OF TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT IN WHICH ACCOUNT IS BEING TAKEN OF PRACTICAL CONDITIONS (I.E. MORTAR IMMERSION TIME, PARTIAL FILLING IN THE PRESTRESSING CHANNEL, UNDULATING SLIDING SLEEVE, DIFFERENT PRESSURES).
