THE AIM OF THE STUDIES IS TO DETERMINE WHETHER AND TO WHAT EXTENT PRESTRESSED CONCRETE ELEMENTS IN LOWER SAXONY, OTHER THAN THOSE WHICH HAVE BEEN REGARDED AS ENDANGERED HITHERTO, ARE THREATENED BY THE ONSET OF BRITTLE AND STRESS CRACKING CORROSION. THE FOLLOWING TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT: 1 - TESTS TO CLARIFY THE QUESTION OF HYDROGEN BRITTLE FAILURE OF PRESTRESSING STEELS IN AQUEOUS MEDIA WITH A HIGH PH VALUE; 2 - TESTS TO CLARIFY THE QUESTION OF HYDROGEN BRITTLE FAILURE OF CONCRETED PRESTRESSED STEEL SAMPLES. ACCORDING TO STUDIES CARRIED OUT HITHERTO THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF DANGER TO ANY OTHER STRUCTURES IN LOWER SAXONY AS A RESULT OF BRITTLE AND STRESS CRACKING CORROSION.
