CONTINUOUS TESTS ON A UNILATERALLY WELDED V-SHAPED BUTT WELD

DAUERVERSUCHE MIT EINSEITIG GESCHWEISSTER STUMPFNAHT IN V-FORM

A METHOD OF MANUFACTURE HAS TO BE DEVELOPED FOR BUTT WELDS WELDED FROM ONE SIDE ONLY WHICH WOULD GUARANTEE GOOD ROOT FORMATION AND SUFFICIENT DURABILITY UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS OF STEEL CONSTRUCTION. MOREOVER THE WELDER SHOULD NOT BE AS BURDENED PHYSICALLY AS IN THE CASE OF A UNILATERALLY WELDED SEAM WITHOUT A BASE. AFTER SEVERAL PRELIMINARY TESTS THE MOST SUITABLE WELDING APPEARS TO BE THAT ON A HERA CERAMIC BASE WHICH IS BUILT UP IN LAYERS THROUGH A 1-2 MM THICK UP POWDER LAYER. 20 TEST SAMPLES AND 8 TEST SAMPLES OF 52-3 STEEL WERE WELDED BY MEANS OF THIS METHOD. DURABILITY TESTING OF THESE SAMPLES GAVE A RESULT OF 13 00 KP/SQ.CM GIVEN THAT R = 1 SIGMA (D). THE DURABILITY IS ABOUT 350 KP (= 21 PERCENT) LOWER THAN THAT OF THE SAMPLES ARC WELDED ON BOTH SIDES AND HAVING A NORMAL QUALITY BUTT WELD. 900 KP/SQ.CM ARE PERMITTED FOR THE NORMAL QUALITY BUTT WELD ACCORDING TO DV 848 - LINE D - FOR 52-3 STEEL AND R = 1. WITH UNILATERAL CERAMIC WELDING THEREFORE ONLY A 1.45 INCREASE IN SAFETY IS PRESENT (IN THE CASE OF BIAXIAL ARC WELDING THE SAFETY IS 1.83 TIMES AS MUCH). BECAUSE UNILATERAL CERAMIC WELDING IS NOT AS SAFE AS BIAXIAL ARC WELDING, CERAMIC WELDING HAS ONLY BEEN USED HITHERTO IN INDIVIDUAL CASES IN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION.
