ESTABLISHING THE INTERACTION OF BUTT WELDS WITH HV SCREWS AND RIVETS UNDER STATIC AND REPETITIVE LOADING. PART 1: TESTS WITH BARS STRESSED BY LONGITUDINAL FORCE

IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE RAILWAY BRIDGE OVER THE RHINE AT GERMERSHEIM, IT WAS NECESSARY TO EXAMINE THE ACTION OF THE ORTHOTROPIC DECK SUBJECTED TO TENSION IN THE REGION OF THE ASSEMBLY JOINTS; CONTRARY TO THE EXISTING SPECIFICATIONS, THESE JOINTS WERE PRODUCED BY WELDED SEAMS (IN THE DECK PANEL) AND HV SCREWS (BEAMS AND WEBS). THE REPORT ON THE TESTS CARRIED OUT WAS PRESENTED IN OCTOBER 1971. THE RESULTS PROVE THE GREATER STIFFNESS OF A WELDED CONNECTION IN COMPARISON WITH A SCREWED CONNECTION, AND THE UNFAVOURABLE EFFECTS OF JOINTS COVERED ON ONE SIDE (MEASURED ON SECTIONS OF JOINTS). DURABILITY TESTS CARRIED OUT HITHERTO LIKEWISE CONFIRM THE UNFAVOURABLE EFFECT OF UNILATERALLY COVERED JOINTS. THE RELATIVELY LARGE SCATTER OF THE TEST RESULTS INDICATES THE NEED FOR A MORE DETAILED EVALUATION TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE, SO THAT THE SAFETY OF THESE TYPES OF CONNECTION CAN BE DETERMINED WITHOUT DOUBT. FURTHER TESTS NEED TO BE CARRIED OUT ON MODIFIED TEST SAMPLES.
