DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SHEETING AND BRACING OF FOUNDATION PITS VERTICAL FORCES OCCUR WHICH ARE DUE TO THE EARTH PRESSURE, BACK ANCHORAGE AND TEMPORARY BRIDGES. SOMETIMES THESE FORCES CAN BE SO HIGH THAT UNECONOMICAL DESIGNS ARE THE RESULT IF CONVENTIONAL CALCULATION METHODS ARE USED. IT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT THAT THE REAL MAGNITUDE OF THE VERTICAL FORCES AT THE BASE OF DRIVEN GIRDERS OR SHEET PILE WALLS BE DETERMINED. THE MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE BY MEANS OF STRAIN GAUGES, PRESSURE CELLS AND SETTLEMENT-STRAIN GAUGES ON DRIVEN GIRDERS AND BACK-ANCHORED SHEET PILE WALLS CONSTRUCTED UNDER REALISTIC CONDITIONS.
