EXPLANATION OF THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF TRANSVERSELY STRESSED BUTT WELDS CROSSED BY FILLET WELDS

A STUDY IS TO BE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE POINT OF INTERSECTION OF BUTT AND FILLET WELDS IS A NOTCHED POINT, WHICH WOULD PROHIBIT THE UTILIZATION OF THE B OR EVEN THE D LINE. IN TESTS CARRIED OUT SO FAR, FRACTURES HAVE NEVER BEEN INITIATED FROM THE BUTT WELD OR THE INTERSECTION OF THE WELDS, BUT ALWAYS FROM THE LINE TRACKS. THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS CURRENTLY BEING UNDERTAKEN WITH SAMPLES WITHOUT LINE TRACKS WILL SHOW WHETHER THE LONGITUDINAL WELDS ACTUALLY HAVE A HARMFUL EFFECT ON THE BUTT WELDS OR THE WELD INTERSECTIONS.
