PENETRATING RADIATION AS AN ENGINEERING TOOL

USING A SIMPLE BASIC MODEL, THE FUNDAMENTAL MECHANISMS FOR THE INTERACTION OF RADIATION AND MATTER ARE CLASSIFIED. THE THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE MECHANISMS AND THEIR IMPACT ON ENGINEERING FROM THE STANDPOINT OF MATERIALS EVALUATION ARE BRIEFLY DEVELOPED, AND A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE PRESENT-DAY STATE OF THE ART. THE ROLE OF THE ENGINEER AS IT HAS DEVELOPED IN THIS FIELD - AND SOME OF THE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE ARE DISCUSSED IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF FUTURE NEEDS IN THE EVALUATION OF MATERIALS. /AUTHOR/
