THE ROLE OF MEASUREMENT AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTS IN UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION. REPORT OF THE FGU WORKING SESSION, 5TH DECEMBER 1975, ZUERICH, SWITZERLAND

LE ROLE DES MESURES ET AUSCULTATIONS DANS LA CONSTRUCTION SOUTERRAINE.

THE ARTICLE EXAMINES THE VALUE OF MEASUREMENTS AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES AS REGARDS SAFETY AND ECONOMY. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE NECESSITY OF JUDICIOUSLY SELECTING THE PARAMETERS OF THE ROCK MASS TO BE DETERMINED AND THE DIMENSIONS NECESSARY FOR THE ROCK SAMPLES TO BE STUDIED. A CRITERION IS GIVEN WHICH DEFINES THE MINIMUM DIMENSIONS OF A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE TOGETHER WITH THE SELECTION OF THE BEST SUITED TEST METHOD. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN ILLUSTRATING THE DETERMINATION OF INITIAL STRESSES WHICH LED TO GREAT SAVINGS AT THE STAGE OF BUILDING THE TUNNEL SUPPORT. A DISCUSSION IS PRESENTED OF THE USEFULNESS OF PILOT GALLERIES TO OBTAIN A REALISTIC IMPRESSION OF THE FINAL STRUCTURE, WITHOUT THE SCALE EFFECT, IN A REAL GEOTECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT AND OF THE INTERACTION OF TUNNEL AND SURROUNDING MEDIUM. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF THE STRUCTURE FOR SAFETY CONTROL DURING CONSTRUCTION AND AT THE COMPLETED STAGE IS EMPHASIZED TOGETHER WITH THE ROLE OF DEFORMATION MEASUREMENTS TO CLEARLY SHOW WHEN A CRITICAL STATE IS REACHED. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF MEASUREMENTS TAKEN JUST BEFORE THE ROOF FALL OF A TUNNEL.
