THE 4TH INTERNATIONAL ATR, FG AND VSS COMMITTEE SUMMARIZE IN THIS REPORT THE RESULTS OF A DETAILED COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE VARIOUS PARAMETERS USED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF HIGHWAY DESIGN. THE PARAMETERS DEALT WITH ARE: (1) COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION; (2) LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION; (3) VARIATION IN TRANSVERSE ACCELERATION; (4) BANKING; (5) DRAINAGE OF SURFACE WATER; (6) DYNAMIC AND GEOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAVY VEHICLES; (7) PERCEPTION-REACTION TIME; (8) HEIGHT OF THE EYE AND OF OBSTACLES; (9) POSITION OF THE EYE AND OF THE OBSTACLES ON THE CARRIAGEWAY; (10) MINIMUM PERCEPTIBLE CHANGE IN DIRECTION; (11) WIDTH AND DEPTH OF THE VISUAL FIELD; (12) MINIMUM TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN TWO DRIVING MANOEUVRES. AT THE END OF THE REPORT THE LIMIT VALUES OF DESIGN USED IN GERMANY, FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND ARE COMPARED IN TABULATED FORM.
