AN INJECTION PROBE FOR RAPID PLACEMENT OF RADIOISOTOPES IN SOIL

NUMEROUS TIME-CONSUMING INJECTIONS OF RADIOISOTOPES IN SOIL ARE REQUIRED IN CERTAIN STUDIES UTILIZING TRACER TECHNIQUES. THE INJECTION PROBE DESCRIBED HEREIN RETAINS DESIRABLE FEATURES OF EARLIER MODELS, BUT ALLOWS PLACEMENT OF THE TRACER TO PROCEED AT A GREATLY ACCELERATED RATE. IN ONE STUDY UTILIZING THREE OF THESE PROBES 1,600 FIVE-ML INJECTIONS WERE MADE AT SOIL DEPTHS RANGING FROM 3 TO 24 THE ENTIRE OPERATION WAS COMPLETED WITHIN 8 HOURS. NO DAMAGE TO PROBES WAS NOTED DURING THIS PERIOD OF HEAVY USE, NO CONTAMINATION PROBLEMS WERE ENCOUNTERED, AND THE EASE OF OPERATION PRECLUDED PERSONNEL FATIGUE. /AUTHOR/
