DEICING CHEMICALS CORROSION INVESTIGATION FOR METROPOLITAN WINNIPEG

THE CORROSIVE EFFECTS OF WINTER DEICING CHLORIDES WERE INVESTIGATED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCES TO STEEL USED IN VEHICLE BODY CONSTRUCTION IN GREATER WINNIPEG. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF FIELD TESTS AND SIMULATION TESTS OF ACTUAL STREET CONDITIONS IN WINNIPEG DURING ONE SUMMER AND TWO WINTER PERIODS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE MAJOR FACTORS AFFECTING CORROSION OF VEHICLE BODY STEEL ARE TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE PRECIPATION FREQUENCY, DEICING CHEMICALS AND INDUSTRIAL FALLOUT. ROCKSALT APPLICATIONS IN WINNIPEG ARE ABOUT FIFTY PERCENT AS CORROSIVE AS IN TORONTO, PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENCE IN TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION FREQUENCY. CHEMICAL DEICING PRACTICE DOUBLED THE CORROSION RATE OVER CORROSION LIKELY TO BE EXPERIENCED IN ITS ABSENCE. HEAVY USE OF CHLORIDES IN THE EARLY PART OF THE WINTER CAUSES MORE TOTAL CORROSION THAN APPLICATIONS LATER IN THE SEASON. OFF-HOUR STORAGE OF A VEHICLE IN A HEATED GARAGE CAN TRIPLE THE CORROSION RATE OVER UNHEATED GARAGE OR OUTSIDE STORAGE. SUMMER CORROSION IS SIGNIFICANT WHETHER OR NOT WINTER DEICING CHLORIDES ARE USED. IN AREAS WHERE NO CHLORIDES ARE USED, SUMMER CORROSION RATES MAY BE HIGHER THAN WINTER RATES.
