SYNTHETIC RESINS IN CONCRETE MIXES

IN THE INTRODUCTION, THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF SYNTHETIC PLASTICS ARE DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT RESIN GROUPS WHICH HARDEN TO HIGH STRENGTH AFTER A FEW HOURS, SOME EVEN AFTER 10 MINUTES, - THE POLYESTER-, EPOXY- AND POLYURETHANE - RESINS. THESE STRENGTH VALUES ARE CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THOSE OF ORDINARY CONCRETE. THE THERMAL EXPANSION IS SOMEWHAT HIGHER. TO REDUCE SHRINKAGE, FILLERS ARE EMPLOYED, SUCH AS ASBESTOS FLOUR OR QUARTZ FLOUR. THE SYNTHETIC RESINS HAVE AN EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH ADHESIVE POWER ON CONCRETE. ADHESION TESTS WITH DIFFERENT SYNTHETIC RESINS ON CEMENT- MORTAR PRISMS AND BENDING TESTS ON MORTAR PRISMS /MIXTURES OF SYNTHETIC RESIN WITH STANDARD SAND/ ARE DESCRIBED. REFERENCES IN THE LITERATURE ARE QUOTED FOR A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS. COATINGS FOR BRIDGE DECKS AND FOR ROAD COVERINGS DAMAGED BY THAWING SALTS ARE OF IMPORTANCE FOR ROAD BUILDING. PAINTS AND COATINGS FOR WATERPROOFING ARE DESCRIBED ALSO. THE USES OF SYNTHETIC RESIN ARE VERY EXTENSIVE SINCE APART FROM HIGH RESISTANCE TO CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL INFLUENCES, THE MATERIAL HAS HIGH STRENGTH AND GOOD ADHESION TO OTHER BUILDING MATERIALS. /RRL/FG/
