THICKNESS AND QUALITY OF CEMENTED SURFACINGS AND BASES MEASURING BY A NON-DESTRUCTIVE SURFACE WAVE METHOD

THE SURFACE WAVE METHOD IS A NON-DESTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUE IN WHICH THE WAVELENGTH AND VELOCITY OF SURFACE WAVES ARE SURFACE OF ANY OF THE LAYERS OF A ROAD CONSTRUCTION AT SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES WITHIN THE RANGE OF 30 TO 30,000 C/S. EXPERIMENTAL DATA OBTAINED ON CONCRETE ROAD SLABS OR ON CEMENTED BASES GIVE A RELATION BETWEEN VELOCITY AND WAVELENGTH FROM WHICH THE THICKNESS AND ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE LAYER OF MATERIAL ARE CALCULATED. EXPIRICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN ELASTIC AND STRENGTH PROPERTIES DETERMINED ON TEST SPECIMENS OF THE SAME MATERIAL PROVIDE A MEANS OF ESTIMATING THE IN-SITU QUALITY OF THE MATERIAL FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA. A SIMPLIFIED EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE HAS ENABLED A CONTINUOUS SURVEY TO BE MADE OF THE VARIATIONS IN PROPERTIES ALONG CEMENTED LAYERS AT A RATE OF UP TO 100 YD / HOUR. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF DETECTING WEAKNESSES IN A CEMENTED BASE AND LOCATING AREAS OF INADEQUATE COMPACTION OR VARIATIONS IN THICKNESS OF A ROAD SLAB. ALTHOUGH THE TECHNIQUES HAVE ONLY BEEN APPLIED TO LAYERS IN A ROAD, THERE IS NO REASON WHY THEY COULD NOT BE APPLIED TO OTHER SURFACE STRUCTURES SUCH AS SUSPENDED FLOOR SLABS. THE THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE METHOD IS EXPLAINED AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OBTAINED AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY, HARMONDSWORTH ARE REPORTED. /RRL/A/
