LEGIBILITY OF SIGNS WITH GREEN BACKGROUND

THE EXPERIMENT DESCRIBED WAS CARRIED OUT AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY, HARMONDSWORTH, TO DETERMINE THE SUITABILITY OF CERTAIN SHADES OF GREEN AS A BACKGROUND COLOUR WHEN USED WITH WHITE LETTERING. FIVE PANELS WERE OBSERVED FROM A DISTANCE OF 140 FT BY 10 SUBJECTS IN A VISUAL ACUITY TEST. EACH PANEL CARRIED A LINE OF 17 BROKEN RINGS /LANDOLT CS/ OF DIMINISHING SIZE WITH THE GAPS ARRANGED AT RANDOM. RINGS ON THE 4 GREEN PANELS WERE WHITE AND THOSE ON A WHITE PANEL WERE BLACK. THE OBSERVERS WERE ASKED TO INDICATE THE POSITION OF THE GAPS, IN EACH RING STARTING WITH THE LARGEST AND WORKING AS FOR ALONG THE LINE OF RINGS AS POSSIBLE. THE SIZES OF THE SMALLEST RINGS IDENTIFIED WERE NOTED. EQUAL BEST RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FROM BACKGROUNDS OF WHITE AND B. S. 2660 6-074 GREEN. THE OTHER GREENS IN ORDER OF MERIT WERE B. S. 2660 6-068, A SPECIALLY MIXED GREEN AND U. S. A. INTERSTATE SIGN GREEN. /RRL/
