DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A TESTING TECHNIQUE WITH QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE BEHAVIOUR OF MIXTURES IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER

ENTWICKLUNG UND ERPROBUNG EINES PRUEFVERFAHRENS MIT QUANTITATIVEN BEWERTUNGSKRITERIEN ZUR BEURTEILUNG DES VERHALTENS VON MISCHGUT IN GEGENWART VON WASSER

SURFACINGS SUBJECTED TO TRAFFIC AND WEATHERING STRESSES DEPEND LARGELY ON THE ADHESION BEHAVIOUR OF THE MIXTURE. FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF THE MANY THEORIES AND TEST PROCEDURES FOR THE ADHESION BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TEST METHOD FOR THE QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF A BITUMINOUS HIGHWAY PAVEMENT IS DESCRIBED WHICH TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THE IMPORTANT INFLUENCE FACTORS OF THE ENTIRE STRESS PATTERN. THE TEST TECHNIQUE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF WHICH IS REPORTED, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO LOAD MARSHALL TEST SPECIMENS TO FLUCTUATING COMPRESSIVE STRESSES UNDER DEFINED TEST CONDITIONS. THE EVALUATION CRITERIA DRAWN UP INVOLVE THE ALTERATION IN THE MARSHALL STABILITY RESULTING FROM THE TEST LOADING. WITH THE AID OF STATISTICAL METHODS, THE DATA OBTAINED FROM THE STABILITY TESTS ARE ANALYSED. FOR THIS PURPOSE A VARIANCE ANALYTICAL MODEL IS SET UP FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL EFFECTS AND THE ALTERNATING EFFECTS OF THE INFLUENCE FACTORS OF THE DYNAMIC LOADING AND A VARIANCE ANALYSIS IS CARRIED OUT. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE WATER EFFECT IS THE PRIMARY INFLUENCE FOR STABILITY CHANGES. THE SECOND MOST IMPORTANT INFLUENCE FACTOR IS THE LENGTH OF LOADING. BOTH INFLUENCE FACTORS TOGETHER WITH THEIR INTERACTIVE ALTERNATING EFFECT RESULT IN A VARIATION COEFFICIENT OF ABOUT 52%. FINALLY, IT IS SHOWN THAT THE ADHESION BEHAVIOUR IS IMPROVED BY THE USE OF WATER REPELLENT MINERAL AGGREGATE AS WELL AS THE ADDITION OF ADHESIVES AND THIS CAN BE CHECKED BY THE NEW TECHNIQUE.
