ECONOMICS OF MACHINE LAYING IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION

WIRTSCHAFTLICHKEIT BEIM MASCHINENEINSATZ IM BITUMINOESEN STRASSENBAU

THE INFLUENCE OF THE STAGNATION IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION UPON THE ECONOMICS OF MACHINE LAYING OF BITUMINOUS ROAD BASES IS DISCUSSED. IN ADDITION TO THE SHORTAGE OF FUNDS BY THE FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL AUTHORITIES A ROLE IS ALSO PLAYED BY THE FIRM COMPETITION OF CONCRETE IN MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION. FOR THE CURRENT LOWER LEVEL OF CONSTRUCTION THE PRESENT LEVEL OF EQUIPMENT IN THE HIGHWAY INDUSTRY WITH SOME 1000 MIXING PLANTS, 4600 FINISHERS, 1800 ROLLERS AND 15-20 LAYERS FOR GUSSASPHALT IS TOO GREAT. MIXING PLANTS CAN PROVIDE ON AVERAGE 80-100 T/HOUR. THEY ARE UP TO 60% UNDERUSED, FINISHERS UP TO 40%. THERE IS ALSO OVERCAPACITY WITH THE GUSSASPHALT EQUIPMENT. THE PRODUCTIVITY IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION LEADS THE OTHER BRANCHES OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. THE LABOUR COSTS WERE REDUCED BETWEEN 1960 AND 1970 BY 50%. THE PERFORMANCE ACHIEVED WITH THE EQUIPMENT CAN BE CONSIDERED TO BE SUFFICIENT. IN THE CASE OF MIXING PLANTS THE STATIONARY MIXERS HAVE MOVED TO THE FOREFRONT. MOBILE PLANTS WITH PERFORMANCES OF 150-180 T/HOUR HAVE BEEN PRODUCED AND THEIR QUALITIES ARE REMARKABLE: SUITABILITY AND OPTIMAL UTILIZATION OF VARIOUS FUELS, PRECISE BATCHING, ECONOMIC REMOVAL OF DUST. WITH THE FINISHERS MULTI-PURPOSE USE IS A CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMY. FURTHER AIDS TO ECONOMY, WHICH CAN ONLY BE INTRODUCED BY THE CUSTOMER, ARE QUOTED; AMONGST OTHERS ARE THE REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF MIX TYPES, REDUCTION IN TEST EXPENDITURE, ALTERATIONS TO THE APPROVAL PROCEDURES FOR THE POSITIONING OF MOBILE MIXING PLANTS.
