VEHICLE MILEAGES ON FEDERAL GERMAN MOTORWAYS ON DAYS WITH PEAK LOADING

FAHRLEISTUNGEN AUF BUNDESAUTOBAHNEN AN TAGEN MIT HOHER VERKEHRSBELASTUNG

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MOTORWAYS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY ARISES FROM THE FACT THAT 25% OF THE TRAFFIC (VEHICLE KILOMETRES) ON NON-URBAN ROADS IS CARRIED ON THE MOTORWAYS, ALTHOUGH THEIR LENGTH IS ONLY 3.5% OF ALL NON-URBAN ROADS. THE TRAFFIC ON THE MOTORWAYS IS SURVEYED BY A NETWORK OF 173 AUTOMATIC COUNTERS. FOR THE COLLECTION OF DATA AT EASTER, WHITSUN AND IN THE HOLIDAY PERIOD ONLY 19 COUNTER POSITIONS ARE CHOSEN, IN ORDER THAT THE EVALUATION OF PEAK TRAFFIC MAY BE AVAILABLE BY 10 A.M. ON THE FOLLOWING MORNING. THE REASONS FOR THE CHOICE OF THE COUNTING STATIONS ARE EXPLAINED. THE MATHEMATICAL-STATISTICAL MODEL FOR THE SHORT TERM RESEARCH INTO AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOWS ON BANK HOLIDAYS AND PEAK HOLIDAYS IS DESCRIBED. IT IS POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN THE FUNCTIONAL LINK BETWEEN THE DATA OF THE SELECTED SURVEY STATIONS AND THE AVERAGE DAILY FLOWS FOR HOLIDAY PEAK DAYS IN 1975. THE DETERMINATION OF DAILY TRAFFIC FLOWS ENSUES IN GENERAL FROM THE SO-CALLED DAILY-TOTAL COUNTERS. THE DATA IS COLLECTED BY THE MOTORWAY ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENTS AND PASSED TO THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY INSTITUTE FOR IMMEDIATE PROCESSING. THE PROCESS IS ILLUSTRATED BY AN EXAMPLE. THE DESCRIPTION SHOWS THAT WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF PARTICULAR INPUT DATA FROM A NUMBER OF AUTOMATIC COUNTERS ON THE MOTORWAYS PROCESSED IN SPECIFIED MODELS AND INFORMATION FROM A FEW LONG-TERM COUNTERS IT IS POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN WITH CONSIDERABLE ACCURACY THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOWS AND THE VEHICLE KILOMETRES FOR BANK HOLIDAY AND PEAK HOLIDAY PERIODS.
