CONSTRUCTION OF FEDERAL GERMAN MOTORWAYS IN 1976

IN 1976 THE REDUCTION IN EXPENDITURE ON THE BUILDING OF FEDERAL MOTORWAYS IN FAVOUR OF LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT HAS BEEN RECOGNISABLY EFFECTIVE. ONLY 200 KILOMETRES OF NEW MOTORWAY WERE COMPLETED. THESE SECTIONS ARE GIVEN ON A MAP AND LIST. OF PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE FOR TRAFFIC ARE THE 63 KILOMETRE FEDERAL MOTORWAY A4 COLOGNE-OLPE AND THE HANOVER CORNER CONNECTION. THE COLOGNE-OLPE FEDERAL MOTORWAY CONNECTS AT 14 LOCATIONS WITH THE MOTORWAY AND LESSER GRADE ROAD NETWORKS. THE TOTAL COST WAS 519 MILLION DM OF WHICH 30.5 PERCENT WERE EARTHWORKS, 34.7 PERCENT BRIDGEWORKS AND 11 PERCENT LAND PURCHASE. FOR THE HANOVER CORNER CONNECTION THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE RUHR AREA (A2) AND HAMBURG (A7) WAS SHORTENED. SUITING BOTH MOTORWAY AND AIRPORT INTERESTS WAS DIFFICULT. THE TOTAL COST OF THE 18 KILOMETRES LONG SECTION WAS 120 MILLION DM. IN 1976 THE CONSTRUCTION OF 300 KILOMETRES OF NEW MOTORWAY WAS COMMENCED. THESE ARE SUMMARIZED IN A LIST. TO EVALUATE THE COSTS OF MOTORWAYS 1956 KILOMETRES OF SECTIONS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1973 AND 1976 WERE EVALUATED. THE COSTS WERE: FOR 4-LANE MOTORWAYS IN HILLY TERRAIN 8.3 MILLION DM PER KILOMETRE; IN FLAT COUNTRY 6.9 MILLION DM PER KILOMETRE. A FURTHER TABLE GIVES THE DIVISION OF MAIN COSTS IN PERCENTAGES.
