APPLICATION OF ISOTOPE PROBES IN SUBSOIL INVESTIGATIONS

THE SOUNDING METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE DENSITY AND MOISTURE CONTENT OF SOIL IN SITU BY MEANS OF ISOTOPE PROBES IS EXPLAINED IN PRINCIPLE. TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF DIFFERENT TASKS THREE TYPES OF PROBE WERE DEVELOPED: A SURFACE PROBE WITH A MEASURING DEPTH EQUIVALENT TO OR LESS THAN 0.10 M; A RECESS PROBE WITH A MEASURING DEPTH EQUIVALENT TO OR LESS THAN 0.70 M; A DEPTH PROBE WITH A MEASURING AREA OF BETWEEN 0.5 M AND 20 M. THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS THE CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OF THE DEPTH PROBE IN ITS FUNCTION OF COMPLEMENTING TRIAL BORINGS (GAMMA PROBES OR NEUTRON PROBES), BESIDES DEALING WITH THEIR CALIBRATION AND EVALUATING THE MEASUREMENT RESULTS. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION TAKEN FROM BUILDING PRACTICE ALLOW THE COMPARISON OF ISOTOPE PROBING TO BORE-HOLES OR DRIVEN PROBES ONLY IN ISOLATED CASES. IN CONTRAST TO DRIVEN PROBES, ISOTOPE PROBING PROVIDES TWO IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC SOIL MECHANIC VALUES - THE DENSITY OF THE DAMP SOIL AND ITS MOISTURE CONTENT. FROM THIS THE BEARING STRENGTH OF GRANULAR SOILS CAN BE ASCERTAINED AFTER THE MEASUREMENT OF THE LEAST FIRM BEARING, AND CONCLUSIONS CAN THEN BE DRAWN AS TO THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE SOIL.
