A STATE OF THE ART REPORT ON THE TECHNIQUES USED FOR STRIPPING, TAKING APART AND THE DEMOLITION OF BUILDING ELEMENTS MADE OF PLAIN OR REINFORCED CONCRETE

ALTERATIONS TO AND THE DEMOLITION OF OLD BUILDINGS WERE SIMPLE AND CHEAP, BECAUSE THE BUILDINGS WERE MADE UP OF SMALL ELEMENTS. BUT FOR TAKING APART AND DEMOLISHING CONCRETE BUILDINGS, WHICH IS CONSIDERABLY MORE DIFFICULT, THERE HAS HITHERTO BEEN NO RESEARCH FOR COMPARISON OF POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES FOR DOING IT. FOLLOWING DEFINITIONS OF THE EXPRESSIONS STRIPPING, TAKING APART AND DEMOLITION, SOME POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES ARE LISTED. FOR STRIPPING CONCRETE SURFACES THE FOLLOWING ARE AVAILABLE: BREAKING HAMMERS, CONCRETE GRINDING TOOLS, MILLING TOOLS AND FLAME CUTTERS. FOR TAKING BUILDINGS APART (FOR EXAMPLE FORMING SLOTS, OPENINGS, RECESSES AND JOINTS) BREAKING AND RIPPING HAMMERS, DIAMOND SAWS, DRILLS, OXYGEN CUTTERS AND PULVERISING CUTTER-BURNERS ARE AVAILABLE. OPENINGS CAN BE FORMED BY MAKING CORE HOLES SIDE BY SIDE (PERFORATION HOLES) AND BY CORE HOLES IN THE CORNERS AND SAWING BETWEEN THEM. EXPLOSIVES CAN BE PLACED IN CORE HOLES TO ACHIEVE ACCURATE BREAKS. TAKING APART BUILDINGS CAN ALSO BE ACHIEVED USING HIGH PRESSURE WATER JETS OR LASER BEAMS. FOR DEMOLITION, NORMAL RIPPING, HYDRAULIC SPLITTING, EXPLOSIVES AND THERMAL CUTTING CAN BE USED. FACTS CONCERNING EACH TECHNIQUE SERVE AS AIDS FOR CHOOSING THE MOST APPROPRIATE ONE.
