THE DETERMINATION OF THE VISCO-ELASTIC PROPERTIES AND STRENGTH OF STABILISED SOILS AND BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS USING A SMALL PENETROMETER WITH A RECORDING DEVICE

BESTIMMUNG DER VISKOELASTISCHEN EIGENSCHAFTEN UND FESTIGKEIT VON ERDSTOFFEN, ERDSTABILISIERUNGEN UND BITUMINOESEN BELAEGEN MIT HILFE EINER REGISTRIERENDEN KLEINSCHLAGSONDE

THE SMALL PENETROMETER WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AT THE FEDERAL GERMAN CENTRAL LABORATORY FOR HIGHWAYS IS USED TO REGISTER THE PENETRATION DEPTH AND REBOUND DURATION OF A FALLING WEIGHT. WITH THESE READINGS THE REBOUND HEIGHT AND VELOCITY CAN BE DETERMINED. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS AN ADEQUATE ASSESSMENT OF THE PENETRATION RESISTANCE (OR STRENGTH) OF A CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL IS POSSIBLE. TO DETERMINE THE VISCO-ELASTIC PROPERTIES THE PENETROMETER IS FITTED WITH A LOAD CELL (SEMICONDUCTOR EXTENSOMETER STRIP) AN ACCELERATION - AND HLW - OR INDUCTIVE DISTANCE RECORDER, WITH WHICH PENETRATION RESISTANCE, PENETRATION VELOCITY AND THE IMPACT DELAY OF THE FALLING WEIGHT CAN BE MEASURED. MEASURED DATA IS RECORDED BY A MULTI-CHANNEL LIGHT BEAM OSCILLOGRAPH. THE SMALL PENETROMETER ENABLES THE STATIC DEFORMATION MODULUS TO BE DETERMINED AND ALSO: THE DAMPING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GROUND, THE STRENGTH OF STABILISED SOILS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PILE TOE RESISTANCE AND PENETRATION DEPTH PER BLOW OF THE PENETROMETER, AND THE PLASTIC DEFORMATION RESISTANCE OF A BITUMINOUS MATERIAL SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC LOADING. COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED FOR PROCESSING THE MEASURED DATA. IMPACT FORCED AND MOVEMENT PATTERNS CALCULATED USING A MODEL (A DAMPED, 2-MASS SYSTEM WITH ST VENANT FRICTION WITHOUT TRANSMISSION OF TENSILE FORCES), AGREE GENERALLY WITH THOSE EXPERIMENTALLY OBTAINED.
