PRINCIPLES FOR ASSESSING THE FATIGUE OF BITUMINOUS BINDER - MINERAL AGGREGATE MIXTURES FROM A MATERIAL TECHNOLOGICAL VIEWPOINT

THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THE VARIOUS WELL KNOWN FATIGUE TESTS, TEST PROCEDURES AND MATERIAL PARAMETERS (MONISMITH, VERSTRAETEN, ETC) AND DISCUSSES THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH TESTS ON THE BASIS OF CONSTANT STRESS OR CONSTANT DEFORMATION. A SO-CALLED PROCEDURE FACTOR IS INTRODUCED BY MEANS OF WHICH THE VARIOUS TYPES OF FATIGUE FAILURE OF DIFFERENT PAVEMENTS CAN BE CORRELATED WITH LABORATORY CONDITIONS. WITH REFERENCE TO RESULTS OF TESTS USING CONSTANT STRESS IT IS NOTED THAT THEY REPRESENT CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES OF MATERIAL FATIGUE AND THAT THE IN-SITU PAVEMENT MATERIAL WITHSTANDS A GREATER NUMBER OF LOAD CYCLES THAN THE LABORATORY SAMPLE. FURTHER, THE RESULTS OF SYSTEMATIC FATIGUE INVESTIGATIONS ARE PRESENTED IN A GENERAL FORM, AND THE QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE THREE MAIN FACTORS RIGIDITY, BITUMEN CONTENT AND VOID CONTENT ON MATERIAL FATIGUE ARE DESCRIBED AS WELL AS A REPRESENTATION OF THE LABORATORY RESULTS IN A FORM SUITABLE FOR DESIGN PURPOSES (GOODMAN-MONISMITH-SALAM DIAGRAM).
