IT WAS INTENDED TO ESTABLISH A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE MINERALOGICAL-MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE AND THE TECHNICAL DATA BY MEANS OF INVESTIGATIONS WITH THE POLARISING AND THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPES. THE STUDY COMPRISED 8 DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLER. A FAVOURABLE, I.E. HIGHLY STIFFENING EFFECT WAS OBSERVED ON FILLERS HAVING A HIGH DEGREE OF MINERALOGICAL UNIFORMITY, CUBIC PARTICLE SHAPE AND ROUGH SURFACE TEXTURE SUCH AS LIMESTONE, AS WELL AS PARTICLES WITH A SPLIT SERRATED SHAPE SUCH AS OCCURS IN LAVA, BASALT AND SLATE MINERALS. THE STIFFENING EFFECT OF GRAYWACKE AS FILLER DEPENDS ON THE PROPORTION OF MICA OR SERRATED SLATE PARTICLES. THE POOR QUALITY OF GROUND QUARTZ MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE SMOOTH SURFACE AND THE LAMINAR PARTICLE SHAPE. FLY ASH EXHIBITED VERY VARIABLE STIFFENING PROPERTIES BECAUSE OF ITS NON-UNIFORM GRAIN STRUCTURE.
