MASTIC ASPHALT SURFACINGS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

ASPHALTMASTIXDECKSCHICHTEN UND IHRE ANWENDUNG

MASTIC ASPHALT IS A COMPACT BITUMINOUS MATERIAL MADE FROM SAND, FILLER AND BITUMEN OR A MIXTURE OF BITUMEN AND NATURAL ASPHALT. IT IS VOID-FREE LIKE GUSSASPHALT AND REQUIRES NO COMPACTION. SURFACINGS CONSTRUCTED WITH MASTIC ASPHALT HAVE, LIKE GUSSASPHALT, WITHSTOOD THE HEAVIEST TRAFFIC. DUE TO ITS EXCEPTIONAL ADHESIVE PROPERTIES SURFACINGS CAN BE PLACED TO LAST ON BITUMINOUS UNDERLAYS OR PAVING. DEFECTIVE AREAS CAN BE REPAIRED LEAVING PRACTICALLY NO TRACE. THE TEMPERATURE AT WHICH IT IS WORKED IS BETWEEN 180 AND 220 DEGREES C. GUIDELINES ON THE MATERIALS AND THE COMPOSITION OF THE MIX ARE CONTAINED IN TV BIT 6/75. THE MIX IS PREPARED IN MIXING MACHINES, TRANSPORTED TO THE PLACING LOCATION IN HEATED CONTAINER TRUCKS WITH AGITATORS, TIPPED ONTO THE BASE AND THEN BITUMINISED HIGH QUALITY CRUSHED STONE IS ROLLED INTO THE SURFACE. THE TOTAL THICKNESS AMOUNTS TO 15 TO 20 MM. THE ADAPTABILITY OF THIS METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION MAKES IT ESPECIALLY ECONOMICAL FOR URBAN ROADWORKS.
