SOIL COMPACTION WITH VIBRATING ROLLERS

VIBRATION COMPACTION OF THE SUB-SOIL UNDER ROADS AND RUNWAYS IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE TO THE EVENNESS OF THE PAVEMENT. THE INCREASE IN THE FRICTION BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL GRAINS BY MEANS OF VIBRATION LEADS TO SUCH DENSE COMPACTION, THAT SUBSEQUENT DYNAMIC TRAFFIC HAS NO FURTHER EFFECT. FURTHERMORE, THE HAMMER EFFECT OF THE ROLLER CONTRIBUTES TO THE COMPACTION. A SERIES OF TESTS WITH VIBRATING ROLLERS AND VARIOUS MATERIALS WAS CARRIED OUT, INVOLVING THE USE OF A VANE PENETROMETER AND A VIBRATING TABLE. RESULTS ARE GIVEN IN A TABLE. THE AUTHOR DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN TWO TYPES OF VIBRATING ROLLER: THOSE WITH FULL MOVEMENT IN ALL DIRECTIONS AND THOSE WITH MOVEMENT ONLY IN A VERTICAL DIRECTION. IT IS SHOWN THAT THOSE ROLLERS WITH MOVEMENTS IN ALL DIRECTIONS HAVE A GREATER DEPTH INFLUENCE.
