RESISTANCE OF MINERAL PARTICLES TO MECHANICAL STRESS

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENTS IN MATERIALS TESTING IS THE DETERMINATION OF RESISTANCE TO IMPACT, COMPRESSION AND ABRASION. NEITHER THE STATIC-DYNAMIC EFFECTS OF EXTREME TRAFFIC LOADING UPON THE PARTICLE STRUCTURE AND ITS REPERCUSSION UPON THE STRENGTH OF THE STONE ARE UNDERSTOOD PRECISELY NOR ARE THE LOADING-LEVELS, FORMS AND EVALUATION TECHNIQUES IN THE TESTING PROCESSES FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF UTILIZATION PROPERTIES OF MINERAL PARTICLE SIZE SUFFICIENTLY CLARIFIED AND MEASURED AGAINST ONE ANOTHER. THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS CRITICALLY THE WELL KNOWN TEST PROCEDURES FOR IMPACT AND COMPRESSION WITH REFERENCE TO THE INFORMATION SHEET BEING PREPARED AT PRESENT BY THE RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT FOR THE TESTING OF MINERAL MATERIALS IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION, LEAFLET NO 5 "RESISTANCE OF AGGREGATES TO MECHANICAL STRESS". ALSO CONSIDERED IS THE TEST PROCEDURE NOT INCLUDED IN THE INFORMATION SHEET FOR COMPRESSION LIMITS AND THE INCLUDED LOS ANGELES TEST SIMILAR TO ASTM-C 131-69 FOR ABRASION AND THE AUTHOR SEEKS, WITH SUGGESTIONS, TO IMPROVE THE TESTING METHODS. IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO DEVELOP A NEW UNIFORM IMPACT APPARATUS WHICH FROM 1975 WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ACCEPTED AS THE STANDARD EQUIPMENT.
