CEMENT CONTENT DETERMINATION FOR CONCRETE AND STABILIZED MIXTURES WITH A SPECIAL CALORIMETER

ZEMENTGEHALTSBESTIMMUNGEN AN BETON- UND STABILISIERUNGSGEMISCHEN MIT EINEM SPEZIALKALORIMETER

THE USUAL METHODS OF MECHANICAL MIX ANALYSIS AND THE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF FRESH CONCRETE ARE TIME CONSUMING AND INVOLVED. MORE MODERN METHODS INCLUDE TESTS INVOLVING NEUTRON RADIATION, COLOUR MEASUREMENT WITH THE COLORIMETER AND MEASUREMENT BY CALORIMETER. THE NEWLY DEVELOPED CALORIMETER TECHNIQUE IS BASED ON THE THERMAL MEASUREMENT OF THE EXOTHERMIC REACTION BETWEEN HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND CEMENT. THE HEAD DEVELOPMENT IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT, SO THAT THE CEMENT CONTENT OF THE FRESH CONCRETE IN HARDENED MIXTURES CAN BE DETERMINED WITHIN MINUTES WITH A RATIO OF ERROR OF ONLY 10%. THIS TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED IN THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, DIFFERS FROM THE FRENCH TECHNIQUE SOMEWHAT IN THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CALIBRATION CURVE IS REPLACED BY THE DETERMINATION OF THE SO-CALLED SPECIFIC REACTION HEAT. THE WORK INVOLVED CONSISTS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF TEMPERATURES OF THE HYDROCHLORIC ACID INFUSED INTO THE CALORIMETER. THEN THE SOIL/CEMENT MIXTURE IS POURED INTO THE CALORIMETER AND AFTER SHAKING THE TEMPERATURE IS READ AFTER ONE MINUTE. THE TOTAL TIME TAKEN FOR THE TEST AMOUNTS TO 30 MINUTES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SPECIFIC REACTION HEAT OF THE CEMENT AND THE TEMPERATURE IS GIVEN.
